Zolpidem is a hypnotic agent with a chemical structure unrelated to benzodiazepines. Zolpidem (Ambien®), an imidazopyridine, is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for insomnia. "Z" drugs have similar problems with long-term use as benzodiazepines: tolerance, rebound effects, and dependence."Z" drugs work act in a similar way to benzodiazepines.They are commonly called the "Z" drugs.Non-benzodiazepine hypnotics currently approved in the United States: zolpidem (Ambien®, Ambien® CR), zaleplon (Sonata®), and eszopiclone (Lunesta®).
